Nigerian Festival: ARGUNGU INTERNATIONAL FISHING AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL 2020 SIMPLY PHENOMENAL

Argungu International fishing and Cultural Festival 2020 is the 60th edition. It is four days of exciting and energetic packed activities you cannot afford to miss. The experience is simply phenomenal and intriguing.

The festival woke the sleeping ancient city of Argungu up as the town began to rock with crowds flowing to the venue of the fishing village where major activities took place. The famous festival is a combination of series of cultural displays carefully packaged to provide the artistic assets, cultural heritage and potentials of the Kabawa ethic group of Kebbi State.

Due to security challenges the Argungu Fishing Festival as been suspended for ten years, picking it up seems impossible, thanks to the visionary Governor of Kebbi State Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu whose administration has been able to revive the Festival with support from the Federal Government which pulled out a mammoth crowd beyond expectation. We must give it up to the Minister of Information and Culture Alhaij Lai Mohammed. He graced the occasion from the official flagging off of the Motor Rally in Abuja the Federal Capital to the official opening of the festival in Kebbi State to the grand finale of the festival.

The Minister in a press interview agreed that the Festival was a huge success and that it has rich content no doubt, what we need to do now is to work on the economic aspect, on how the festival can be managed to bring out its full potential in terms of returns on investment. The Minister also agreed that from all he has seen, what we need to do is to provide infrastructure to enable tourism to thrive. The local participation was massive. In the area of crowd control the Minister agreed that more work will be done so as to have a better improved organization as the crowd was unprecedented and overwhelming.

The festival is enriched with a wide range of content, various activities to showcase the rich cultural heritage and sporting activities the people are engaged in. In addition to this year’s edition are the Essay Competition and Motor Rally which is a rally that was flagged off in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, The Motor Rally, one of the many events slated for the 11-14 March Festival, is unique, because unlike the other events which
are domiciled in Argungu, the rally starts from Abuja,

crisscrossing four states Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto, before rounding up in Kebbi State – the home state of the Festival.

The annual Argungu Fishing and Cultural Festival, is a testimony to the success of the Buhari Administration’s efforts at restoring peace and security in the country. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this when he flagged off the 2020 Argungu Motor Rally at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the flag-off, also said the fact that only vehicles assembled in Nigeria are participating in the rally shows the Administration’s commitment to building local capacity and diversifying the economy through manufacturing. The rally has demonstrated that these luxury vehicles are indeed durable and reliable.

He said another attribute of the Argungu Motor Rally is that it will promote tourism in the country.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed congratulated the government and people of Kebbi State for the revival of the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, which has not been held for the past 10 years due to security considerations. ”You can now see that the Argungu Fishing and Cultral Festival is not just a local or state festival, but a national festival, a festival of unity. This is why the Federal Government will continue to provide all the necessary support for the Festival, and indeed for all the festivals on our national calendar,” the Minister said.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State; the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, among other dignitaries.

The centennial occasion was officially flagged off in Argungu with a polo march and Camel racing competition. The Agricultural Exhibition showcases agricultural advancement and variety of produce and programs initiated by the government to improve and increase production. One of the notable feat at the exhibition venue are the rice paddy pyramids which has replaced the groundnut pyramid.

various individuals and Organisations.  The winner is to officially go home with a brand new saloon car, a million naira and a ticket to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. the Winner was graced with additional donation worth a total of eleven million plus and an additional car and ticket.

Although the Director General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation Mr. Folorunsho Coker was unavoidably absent from the festival due to an emergency meeting with the Senate, his representatives were present with adequate media coverage.

NTDC participation was visible as it constructed the Stand under which the President stood during the Agricultural Exhibition.

During the Agricultural exhibition there was a rich colorful parade of tradition and cultural artistes heritages displayed, ranging from Emir’s guards, Warriors on horses, etc.

The Kabanci display water sports competition is an additional attraction, it is a combination of traditional Water Sports associated with “Kabawa” such as swimming, diving, bare hand Fishing, wild duck catching, blindfold swimming competition, canoe racing etc. Very exciting experience indeed.   Other competition include Archery competition, cycling and various animal races, local wrestling and boxing, goat skinning competition.

The grand finale is the Fishing Competition, the zenith of the festival. You can see across the Matan Fada River, thousands of fishermen lined up across a mile along the river bank. One of the trills is when the fishermen are flagged off to enter the river, it’s amazing as some people speculated that the number of fishermen could be up to thirty thousand. The biggest fish weights 78kg and the second biggest fish weights 75kg while the third place fish weights 60kg.

Dignitaries at the grand finale includes the Senate President Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, Emir of Gombe, Emir of Gandu, Saltan of Sokoto, Oni of Ife, Chief Justice of the Federation, Oba of Igbo Oyo State, the Executive Governor of Niger State, Plateau State, Senator Umar Abubakar and several others.

Countries that participated include Cameroun, Niger Republic and Chad.

The Senate President also commended the Arm forces for their relentless effort in fighting the insurgence and protecting lives and property, he said that there are resolutions that will be forwarded to the President to better equip the Arm Forces. As an International festival

According to the Senate President, he said that the Argungu fishing festival is a celebration of what unites us as a people more than what separates us.
