2018 Carnival Calabar A Dazzling Experience

Fabulous Calabar Carnival 2018 The 32-day annual street party which kicked off on the 1st of December has indeed created the opportunity to tell the story of the African race in line with the carnival’s theme, “AFRICANISM”.

The Cultural day saw the African story being told in an array of rich cultural heritage which represents the Nigerian Nation. A display of diverse artistic splendor and creativity, modern and ancient curator meet to expose Nigeria and Africa’s rich cultural heritage. This is what makes Nigeria a gallery of diverse cultural heritage.

Mr. Gabe Onah the Chairman Calabar Carnival Commission has revealed that the 2018 edition of the carnival will host more than 30 countries as well as 25 states from Nigeria. Some of the countries expected include, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, Greece, Kenya, Ghana, Mexico, Senegal, and the popular Brazilians, among others.

The gang of Bikers indeed added glitz and glamour to the carnival excitement with four gangs participating with their wonders on wheels. Their performance was a spectacle to behold. The bikers were led by the Governor of Cross River State Ben Ayade’s gang called the Scorpio. Others include Metallic Knight, Aviators lead by former Governor of Cross River State Donald Duke and Tinapa Knight.

A program such as this creates the opportunity to sell tourism products little wonder Otunba Segun Runsewe the DG NCAC joined the troupe from Brazil and Ethiopia for a drink at Sheraton hotel Abuja before they arrived in Calabar to intimate them about the Nigerian Culture, trust me he is very good at it.

According to Gabe Onah, the Carnival has over the past years evolved as it continues to attract tourist from all around the world to Cross River State in Nigeria, the event has continually through evaluation shown its impact in the economy of the State and Nigeria as a Nation.

He said Calabar has become the melting point of Africa’s hospitality due to it’s diverse tourism events and sites, the green environment and the warm hospitality of the people.

According to a tourist Mr. Emmanuel, this year’s carnival was the best ever. The carnival kicked off for the first time early enough from five different locations across the city for everyone to watch as twenty nine visiting Countries participated fully in the fanfare. It’s obvious the People are taking ownership of the carnival as displayed during the program ; people danced and partied all night till morning. International delegates were overwhelmed with excitement as a result of the fun. according to him it was fun fun fun all the way, no dull day.

The festival entails the carnival, performances such Fashion Show, Beauty pageant, symposiums. Boat Regatta, Christmas Village, Traditional Dances and the Annual Ekpe masquerade festival, etc.

According to Ambassador Ikechi Uko a Consultant to the Carnival Commission, on a Social media platform he retorted that Carnival Calabar is for entertainment and education using the interpretation of the themes. It is theater on the road, organized for that purpose. It positions itself as Africa’s biggest street party and it delivers on that promise.

Indeed Carnival Calabar and Festivals 2018 will leave a lasting memory in the hearts of all who attended and sure the Organizers have put up a five star performance they must sustain and improve upon.

Over three million people watched live the carnival while twenty-nine countries around the world participated. Both national and International delegates and visitors are expected to increase in 2019 with spectacular innovations.

Popular Brazilian Contingent

We can only hope that many others will take a clue from the achievement of the Cross River State Government and reinvent or create their own Concept to harness their unique tourism and Cultural products that will drive tourism and boost the economy of their state in line with the UNWTO program for Sustainable tourism and economic development.
